First of new mezzanine floors installed for Tesco -
The recent move by UK supermarkets to rapidly expand their non-food range will create a potential boom for the storage industry, reported Britannia Storage Systems today. The company stated that interest in mezzanine floor space has increased significantly in the last quarter, and it has recently completed an installation at Tesco’s Slough store.
Tesco is expanding its range of goods and services with its Extra! brand, which will include an extended food range and an additional non-food range.
By adding a mezzanine floor to part of the back-of-house storage space in the Slough branch, one of the first Tesco stores to carry the new brand, an extra 200 square metres of storage was created. This was the most cost-effective means of creating the capacity with little disruption to the store’s operations.
Planning and timing were of paramount importance for the three-day installation. The storage area for Tesco Direct, the online shopping service, is very busy and had to be kept operational. Pat Lea, Project Manager at Tesco said, “We selected Britannia due to their track record in supplying quality bespoke products and their reputation for excellent service. I was confident the project would be very effective in giving us the solution we needed, and within a very short timescale.”
Peter Rimell, Managing Director of Britannia Storage Systems, said, “We already have a long-standing relationship with Tesco, supplying racking and shelving, but this was the first time we had been asked to supply them with a mezzanine floor. The whole project ran smoothly from start to finish, including the additional racking to the new floor.
“It is important for operations such as Tesco’s to respond rapidly to the market and customer needs, and this obviously has an impact on their storage requirements. As more companies recognise the need to expand their product lines, particularly in the area of online ordering and delivery, we expect the demand for innovative storage solutions to increase.
We are looking forward to further mezzanine floor projects for Tesco’s other expanding stores,” he said.
