Britannia Provides Storage to Maximise Space at the Victoria & Albert Museum
Britannia Storage Systems is a preferred supplier to the Victoria and Albert Museum, and operates within the Museum’s storage framework agreement system. As part of their ongoing relationship with the V&A, Britannia has recently installed mobile bases as part of storage rationalisation projects that enable the museum to maximise capacity. The V&A, home to the national collection of fine and decorative arts, needed secure and accessible storage for its offsite facility in West London. Britannia’s mobile bases facilitate increased security by enabling adjacent, enclosed bases to be locked into position.
Britannia’s most recent installation was of tailor-made bases specially designed to fit the existing structural floor grid and to support existing storage systems housing objects from the Indian collection, such as elephant armour, ceramics and musical instruments. The bases are designed to accommodate the diversity of storage units required for this varied collection.
Compatibility with other manufacturers’ cabinets and shelving enables the Museum to take a flexible approach to storage, essential for a museum with such a large and diverse collection. The provision of mobile bases ensures that museum curators can easily access reserve collections and maximise the capacity of storage areas. Britannia has previously installed bases at South Kensington: for the National Art Library; for the Prints, Drawings and Paintings Department in the Henry Cole Wing; for bespoke hanging and drawer storage for costume and flat textiles; and for the Indian Department’s Study Room.
Peter Rimell,
managing director, Britannia Storage Systems, said, “Working with this
prestigious national museum has been very rewarding. Britannia has worked
in the museum sector for 20 years, and we recognise the important role
that storage plays in ensuring that collections are accessible and preserved
for future generations. Museums seek to invest in quality systems to ensure
value for money, and to assure the longevity and safekeeping of their irreplaceable
collections. ”
